On Thursday, August 23, Radio MIX 106 in Boise will sponsor a Cares for Kids radiothon to help The Idaho Foodbank feed children who would otherwise go hungry over the weekend when schools meals are not available. Help benefit the Backpack Program. Call 275-8809 and become a Backpack Buddy!
MIX 106 will enlist the help of its listeners from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., and all proceeds will benefit the Backpack Program of The Idaho Foodbank.
Every weekend in Idaho, thousands of children leave school and face two days without enough food. The Idaho Foodbank currently distributes 2,000 backpacks a week full of food to help those children.
The Backpack Program supplies nutritional meals to school children who would otherwise go hungry over the weekend. Nearly 25% (one in four) of Idaho's children are food insecure, meaning that they don’t know where their next meal will come from.
That is the 21st highest rate in the country. All of the food in the backpacks is purchased by The Idaho Foodbank using guidelines set by their staff nutritionist.
The cost to sponsor one child for a full month is $24.80, and the cost to sponsor one child for a full school year is only $229.40. That is less than a third of what the average American family spends on soda a year. And all you have to do to help is call 275-8809 on Thursday, August 23, from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.
The Idaho Foodbank is an independent 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization
comprised of a partner network of more than 200 hunger relief agencies
throughout the state of Idaho.
