About Chefs to the Rescue
The concept behind
Chefs to the Rescue is simple. Rather than throw out
perfectly good food that has been prepared but not served,
restaurants and caterers across the valley donate that food
so it can nourish people in need. |

Our staff and
volunteers, who are all trained in safe food handling,
pick up high quality, nutritious food from restaurants,
caterers, and special events. The food is then quickly
distributed to various agencies based on need and
ability to accept the type of food offered.
Food donors are protected
from liability by the Bill Emerson Good Samaritan Act*,
as long as they donate the prepared food to a non-profit
in good faith for distribution to people in need.
Chefs to the Rescue
was created in 1997 by a Boise woman who was homeless at
the time. While shopping at a local store, she
noticed a deli employee throwing away food they had not
been able to sell. |
The idea came to her: If she
could find surplus food similar to that, she could distribute it to
people who really needed it. She and her children started their own
food rescue operation, and in 1998 it became an official program of
The Idaho Foodbank. Since then the program has matured into a
nationally recognized program. Volunteers play an essential role in
picking up food, keeping accurate records, and re-distributing it,
and all are trained to follow safe food handling procedures.
Though Chefs to the Rescue has been highly successful over the past
nine years, we have taken steps that will allow us to improve and
expand this landmark program. In 2007, we combined Chefs to the
Rescue with our new Grocery Alliance Program. The increased
efficiency created by this change will enable us to expand both
programs beyond the Boise area and make better use of our food and
financial donations. As a result, we will better serve both our
donors and the people in need we serve.
